J. S. Watkins John Samuel WATKINS (1866-1942)  Early photo from newspaper cutting Artist and TeacherBorn Wolverhampton, England, came to Australia aged 16. Studied in Paris at Académie Julian. He was a trustee of the Art Gallery of N.S.W., in which he is represented, and was a former vice-president of the Royal Art Society of N.S.W. For more than 40 years he directed a school of painting and drawing in Sydney. His former students include, H.A.Hanke , Normand Baker , Alan D. Baker, Sir Eric Langker and William Pidgeon. Some of the best black and white artists in Australia were trained at the Watkins school.
